Corkscrews, Stairway to Heaven, Jailhouse Rock and The Land of Oz
| "Corkscrew!" So it's like, I've been working on my book, hopelessly addicted to online Scrabble, feeling all wordy and writer-y and everything. And yet, I have spent all week staring at this new shape I've been so obsessed with, experiencing total blackout as far as describing it is concerned. "It's like, a helix or something. I'll call them 'Helix Beads'." "It's not really a helix though. A helix is something else." "There has got to be a word for this. A double helix?" "Nope, that's something else too - in more ways than one. Don't even go there." "A spiral?" "Nope." "I'll just call it a 'Swirl' then. It's a swirl." "But you already use the word 'swirl' to describe 71 other designs." "Argh." I just couldn't come up with the word - in English or in Hebrew. Weird. You can guess how well I know my way around a hardware shop. |

As I was doing all the photoshopping (big batch of beads today), finally, the word corkscrew pops into mind, just out of nowhere. Corkscrew! CORKSCREW! It's a Corkscrew!

Today, the task of naming the beads, which I sometimes enjoy and sometimes dread, was... well, interesting. Remember when I told you about my little book of names? I'm talking about my little purple notebook, where I jot down potential names for beads - the one containing some names that are actually usable and a few that are incredibly dumb, such as 'Purple Pesto', 'Jailhouse Rock' and even 'Planet of the Grapes' (seriously). Anyway. Lately, when I look for bead names, I usually leaf through the last pages of the book. I don't even bother with the first pages, assuming that if I wrote a name down 18 months ago and I still haven't used it, it must be one of those ridiculously lame ones. But today I decided to go back to the first pages, to see if by any chance I had left any treasures behind. Then, on the very first page, I came across the name Stairway to Heaven and had an OMG moment. OMG, this bead IS Stairway to Heaven! Ha! Can you see it? I don't know if there was ever a more appropriate name for a bead. |
It took about an hour, but I found names for all the beads, except this one. > "What the hell is this thing? It doesn't look like anything." "It's a CORKSCREW!" "I'm not naming a bead 'Corkscrew'. I refuse. What will be next? 'Stapler'? 'Pliers'? 'Power Drill'? So... I did it. I finally did it. Those two infamous words were just calling out to me from the middle of the page. I tried to resist, but I couldn't. Jailhouse Rock! Yes. I finally named a bead 'Jailhouse Rock'. Why? I don't know. It just seemed appropriate. Can you see it? Sort of? Please? |

This just goes to show that just about any name will come in handy sooner or later. Or maybe it goes to show how desperate I really am. Hey, I have named well over a thousand (or two?) focals and sets over the past couple of years. There has been only one duplicate that I know of - and it was a mistake, I swear. I was horrified once I realized it. It was too late to make any changes. I could never intentionally give two beads the same name. That would be like, giving two of your kids the same name, or something. That would be crazy!
Last but not least - here's a new set I made this week. It's called The Land of Oz. I was going to name it 'Oz', but I didn't want anyone to think I was referring to the TV show. I don't want to imagine what would be going through people's minds if I had 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Oz' in the same week.
Now I am going to get back to my excruciatingly long computer day. All these beads - and many others - will be available on eBay and Etsy, hopefully within the next few hours.

wow! Beautiful!
