Satake
"What's going on with your beads this week?" Some people wanted to know. "There's something different about them."
Yes, there is! I've been playing around with Satake this week. Satake is Japanese glass, and I'm discovering that it is very different from its Eurpoean counterparts. First of all, the colors... aaaahhhh, the colors. This stuff comes in a wonderful array of shades, including some of the most gorgeous pinks and purples I have ever seen - and I'm a sucker for nice pinks and purples! But the other shades are great as well. The blues, the greens, the yellows... I have to keep myself from taking a bite out of them.

Another cool thing about this glass is that many of the colors are translucent - or as they are called in the glass world, "opalino" or "alabaster" (I have been lampworking for over a year now and I still have no idea what the difference between opalino and alabaster is - can someone fill me in?) These colors blend into eachother beautifully, creating a different look for my beads. But that might have something to do with the softness - this glass is VERY soft, meaning, it melts VERY quickly and stays melty for a while, so I have to work over a tiny flame. (I'm thinking when Tel Aviv July and August come along, I might not even need a torch to melt it...
It's like a whole new glass experience.
Here are some new focals up for auction this week:

You can find them on eBay. There are also some more Satake focals still available at the shop.
I hope you enjoy this glass as much as I am! Have a great week.

What a fantastic show of beads Sarah. They are sooo stunning. Random yet so precise. My head goes all funny when I look at your beads - there's just so much detail, soft colours, fantastic patterns to take in! You have the balance of your beads down too - the asymmetry is fantastic. Keep up the good work and expect a purchase from me in the near future!
